A Historic Riverside Retreat - Hamilton House, South Berwick, Maine

Hamilton House was built by merchant Jonathan Hamilton, from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1788. The Georgian-style house stands above the Salmon Falls River, and is surrounded by formal gardens and a 200-acre wildlife sanctuary. The house was sold to Olive and Joshua Haven, who lived there until 1815, when it was acquired by Nathan Folsom. It changed hands again in 1839, when it was sold to Alpheus and Betsy Goodwin. During the Goodwin ownership the house fell into disrepair and in stepped author, preservationist and South Berwick native Sarah Orne Jewett. Jewett convinced her friend Emily Tyson, the widow of former president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, to purchase the property with her stepdaughter, Elise, and restore the home. Little alterations were made to the home during the next fifty-years, and the property is now a house museum owned by Historic New England and is open for tours.

This is what caught my eye, I hope you enjoy it!
