Girl Scouts Founder Birthplace - Juliette Low House

Juliette Gordon Low was born in Savannah, Georgia, on October 31, 1860, and was affectionally known as Daisy. In 1886 she married William Mackay Low and moved into the Andrew Low House, which William inherited upon his father’s death. Low was inspired by the Scout Movement work of Lord Baden-Powell, and she joined the Girl Guide movement in England, and forming her own group there in 1911. In 1912, Juliette now a widow, met with a group of volunteers in the Andrew Low house parlor to establish the first U.S. Girl Guide troop in Savannah, Georgia. In 1915, the United States' Girl Guides became known as the Girl Scouts, and Juliette Gordon Low was the first ever leader. She remained active until the time of her death at 66 years old.
