Milton Massachusetts Gilded Age - Eustis Estate
The stately Eustis mansion is a historic family home designed by Milton architect William Ralph Emerson and built in 1878 for William Ellery Channing Eustis and his family. W.E.C. Eustis came from an affluent family and went on to own three copper mines and smelting foundries in Canada, California and Virginia and was an inventor and amateur photographer.
Today the Eustis mansion sits high on a hill on 110 Milton, Massachusetts acres with a beautiful 1892 stone gatehouse at the entrance and a stone barn. The highly-decorative three-story mansion is built out of local stone and has a red tile roof. There is a porte-cochere with arches and six chimneys. The house is full of intact architectural and design details. The estate remained in the family until it was sold in 2012 to the architectural preservation organization, Historic New England and is open for tours. Visitors have two options to see the house, guided and self-guided tours. Each room has interactive digital kiosk(s) to offer more information about the room, furnishings, restoration or the family.
