Seaside Villages On The Italian Riviera - Cinque Terre, Italy

Cinque Terre, if you are not familiar with it, is a string of century-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coast. The five larger towns are made up of colorful houses, seafood restaurants, steep cliffs, and harbors filled with fishing boats. It was once a “hidden treasure” but more and more people discovering it.

Hiking trails and railway connect the villages with dramatic sweeping water views. Cinque Terre is a national park and a UNESCO world heritage site.

The towns can be explored via railway, boat and hiking trails.

Each town is unique:

  • Riomaggiore is the easternmost and largest village

  • Manarola is the oldest of the five villages

  • Corniglia is the only town with no direct sea access

  • Vernazza is considered the quaintest and steepest of all villages

  • Monteroso is the westernmost village, and the only one that has an actual beach

These charming villages are so well preserved, and brings you back to simpler times.

What you should know:

  • The only way to access the area is rail, boat or hiking trails.

  • You could spend anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days here.

  • There are hiking and walking trails.

  • You should wear comfortable shows.

  • Cars are prohibited from the villages.

  • There are many restaurant options, many with spectacular views.

  • You will need a valid passport and a travel power pater if you are coming from the US.

  • When walking / hiking, please be respectful. This is a tourist area, but there are many private homes.

  • People are definitely friendly and helpful; many people speak English.

  • The currency is the Euro (EU).

  • Tipping is not necessary, although some will round up to the next dollar on the total.
