The Estate Tobacco Built - Reynolds
Reynolda was built between 1912 and 1917 by Kathharine Smith Reynolds and her husband R.J. Reynolds, founder of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, on 1,067 acres. Located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the original estate included the main house and thirty other buildings, and twenty-eight of them still survive today in the Reynolda Village as boutiques, shops and restaurants.
Reynolda was home to two generations of the Reynolds family. In 1935, the eldest daughter, Mary Reynolds Babcock, acquired the estate. She and her husband used the house as a vacation home until 1948, when they made it their full-time residence.
The main house has restored interiors rooms and furnishings, done by the Museum, to reflect the periods when the family lived there and is called Reynolda House Museum of American Art and houses a permanent collection of American art and sculpture from three centuries, displayed throughout the house.
Don, the docent that was at the house when I visited, was very informative.
Here is what caught my eye, I hope you enjoy!
