The Town Made Famous For Lending Its Name To A Music & Art Fair - Woodstock, NY

Although the famous three-day Woodstock Music & Art Fair, held from August 15–17, 1969, took place nearly 45 minutes west of Woodstock at Max Yasgur's 601-acre dairy farm in Bethel, New York (now the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts), the spirit of the 1960s and early 1970s remains alive in this quaint village nestled in the Catskill Mountains. Peace, love, understanding, art, and music continue to thrive here.

The festival showcased many iconic rock acts, including Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone, The Who, and the Grateful Dead, becoming synonymous with the counterculture of the 1960s. Originally, it was planned to take place on a site owned by Alexander Tapooz in Woodstock, but opposition from local residents forced the organizers to find a new location. Despite the change, the name "Woodstock" endured, as it had been heavily advertised and was already widely recognized.

By the time the festival was conceived, Woodstock’s music and art community was already flourishing. Rock legends like Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, and The Band had spent time in the Catskills, where the counterculture’s music and art scene thrived.

Today, Woodstock continues to be a haven for creative minds. The area boasts farm-to-table restaurants, breweries, sustainable hotels, and organic cider farms. At its heart is The Center for Photography at Woodstock, located in the same building that once housed Cafe Expresso, where Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and other musicians performed during the 1960s.

This is what caught my eye; I hope you enjoy!
