I originally discovered Owego on a trip back from the Thousand Islands. It was only a quick drive through, but there was a certain charm about the downtown that called me back. Situated on the Susquehanna River, Owego is the county seat of Tioga County in New York State. It has a small town feel, but somewhat cosmopolitan with restaurants, boutiques, antiques and scenic riverwalk. The name Owego is derived from the Iroquois word Ahwaga, meaning “where the valley widens”.

This Owego mural is in the center of town on the Early Owego Antique Center Building on Main Street.

Inside the Early Owego Antique Center, on Lake Street in the historic J.J. Newberry building, is an antique mall with vendor booths filled with fun treasures.

The Historic District in Owego consists of approximately 90 buildings.

Riverrow is a striking group of Greek Revival and Italianate commercial buildings on the north bank of the Susquehanna River.

The Tioga Theater on Main Street was built in 1908.

There are many unique storefronts.

The Baker Fireman’s Fountain was given to the town and its firefighters by Frank Baker as a memorial to his son George, who was killed in a car accident in 1913.

The Tioga County Courthouse set in a park in the center of town, was built between 1871 and 1872.

The Owego Firehouse at 89 North Street was built in 1911. The clocktower provides a visual anchor for the end of the historic district.

What you should know:

You could spend a couple of hours to an entire day.
This has a walkable downtown.
People are friendly and helpful.
On street parking is available, some metered; check posted parking regulation signs.
There is a walking trail along the river.
