5,000 Years Of Art in New York City - The Met

A group of Americans agreed to create a gallery of art and bring it to the American people. The Metropolitan Museum of Art was opened in 1870 and resided in a few different locations before the present home on 11.5 acres of New York’s Central Park in 1880. Richard Morris Hunt designed the classical Beaux-Arts Fifth Avenue facade and the Great Hall.

In total, the museum boasts 36,000 objects, including 2,500 European Old Masters, Impressionist, and Pos-Impressionist paintings as well as the greatest collection of Egyptian art and artifacts outside Cairo. Over the years, The Met acquired many collections from private collectors as well as furniture and entire rooms.

If you cannot travel abroad, and have never been to the The Met, I hope this blog will inspire you to make a plan to visit for yourself.
