Montpelier is the smallest capital city in the United States, but is big on character and charm with a casual vibe. The downtown, centered around two main roads, State and Main Streets, are low-key, clean, friendly and very walkable. Montpelier was recognized as one of the 100 best small arts towns in the U.S. Why not take a leisurely walk around the small downtown?

The Vermont State House is the oldest operating state house in the Unites States.

The Vermont State House was built in 1859, in the Greek Revival-style with a gold dome.

This entrance, to 26 State Street, was designed by George H. Guernsey and completed in 1875.

Chill - you can get the feel of the casual vibe of the town.

Montpelier has a thriving art scene.

Washington County Courthouse, at 65 State Street, was constructed in 1844. There was a fire in the building in 1881, and the tower was rebuilt in the Second Empire-style, which was more fashionable at the time.

Montpelier has a vibrant, engaged and neighborly downtown with an assortment of well-preserved architecture and independently-owned shops.

A public pandemic marquee message is displayed on the Capitol Theater, originally opened as the Playhouse Theater in 1926.

I was told this building, with the arched entrance, was built for the National Life Insurance Company in 1891, containing one of the first elevators in the state of Vermont.

The four-story City Hall was constructed between 1908 and 1909.

American Bridge Company built this train trestle bridge in 1929.

The Winooski River runs right through the heart of the city.

The walkable downtown area offers unique local businesses and historic architecture.

The Vermont Historical Society Museum is located on State Street.

Since 1905, the 120-seat main theater, at The Savoy Theater, has been an eclectic art space. It also contains a smaller, more intimate 35-seat downstairs theater.
