A Modern Architect’s Longtime Hillside Residence - Frey House II

Built in 1964, this residence was designed by influential architect, Albert Frey as his personal retreat. Perched on the mountainside high above downtown Palm Springs, this house seamlessly integrates with its surrounding landscape.

When Albert passed away in 1998 at 95, the iconic structure was bequeathed to the Palm Springs Art Museum, which now owns the property. Tours of the house can be arranged through Modern Tour.

When you get to the top of the windy driveway, you see the carport, which supports the pool built up above. The cement foundation was painted to match the mountainside.

A cantilevered design enhances the feeling that the house and pool floating above the city.

In the bedroom area large glass panels let in natural light and blur the boundaries between the indoor and outdoor.

The industrial corrugated metal ceiling can be seen here over the elevated dining area.

Built-in furniture is used to maximize the use of space and the boulders extend into the home making it become one with mountain.

The extensive walls of floor-to-ceiling sliding glass offers sweeping panoramic views.

The compact bathroom with pale pink tile and built-in toilet.

Seating, with built-in drainage, was constructed into the side of the house.

The narrow galley-style kitchen features storage behind upper sliding cabinet doors and traditional lower drawers and doors. This room boasts an incredible view.
