A Park With A Past - Islip Grange

The Islip Grange is a 12-acre park in Sayville, N.Y. It was founded in 1974, and contains a number of Long Island period structures that were moved here to represent a typical pre-civil War Long Island hamet.

This Dutch Reformed Church is a three-quarter-scale-model reproduction of the original 1867 building which still exists on the east end of West Sayville on Main Street. It has been altered to house retail space on the lower floor.

George Robinson built this cottage in 1920. It was intended as a real estate office for his wife. The inspiration for the design comes from English thatched roof countryside cottages. 

This is a reproduction of an 1860 carriage shed found in St. James opposite the St. James Episcopal Church on North Country Road (NYS 25A).

The Ockers Barn, dating back to 1800, once stood on the north side of Montauk Highway in Oakdale.

The barn area also has a four-seat outhouse and a chicken coop

Built in 1895 by the Powell family, this farm water pumping windmill was originally located between Handsome and Greene Avenues in Sayville.

Built in 1901, this is the Estate Manager’s Cottage from ‘Pineacres’, the East Islip estate of Percy Williams.

The historic Sayville Hook and Ladder building was built in 1878

.

The Tuthill-Case House was built by Benjamin Tuthill sometime between 1850 and 1860.

What you should know:

• There are walking trails.

• Public restrooms are available.

• Picnicking is allowed.

• Check website for operating hours and days.

• You could spend a couple of hours exploring here.

• There are normally no guided tours or access to the buildings.

• Check website for special events including a farmers market.
