A Sacred Gem Crowning Sintra - Pena Palace
Pena Palace, a storybook-like castle perched on a hill in the Sintra Mountains is an amazing sight. This was the summer residence for the Portuguese royal family, opened in 1854, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The palace is the centerpiece of a sprawling park with pathways leading through parklike grounds with grottos and exotic plants. Both the exterior and interior of the castle are a combination of many architectural styles, reflecting the eclectic tastes of the 19th century Romantic period. A visit to this site is a must for history, architecture and art enthusiasts.
