A Victorian Writer’s South Berwick Maine Retreat - Sarah Orne-Jewett House
The Sarah Oren-Jewett House was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991 for its association with the Victorian-age writer. Built in 1774, the Georgian-style home situated on the corner of Portland and Main Streets is next door to her grandfather’s home, built around 1850, where she was born. The family lived in the two homes for many years and the Jewett-Eastman House, now the visitors center, was a public library for a period of time.
Sarah became known for her publications, a work popularized a form of literature now called American literary regionalism. She established a close relationship with Annie Adams Fields, the widow of her publisher, and traveled together and began a relationship which was termed a “Boston marriage”. The two women spend time between South Berwick, a home on Charles Street in Boston and Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusettes.
