America’s First Poet’s Roslyn, NY Home - Cedarmere
Cedarmere is the historic home of William Cullen Bryant on seven Roslyn Harbor acres. Bryant was a prominent nineteenth century American poet, newspaper editor, civic leader and leading figure in the fight against slavery. He named the estate after the cedar trees which ringed the mere, or lake. Bryant regarded the house, originally built in 1787, as his primary residence for the rest of his life. Bryant greatly enlarged the original farmhouse on the property and added the Gothic Revival mill, ice house, boathouse and over the tears planted numerous exotic trees and flowers creating a horticultural showplace.
Upon Bryant’s death in 1878, Cedarmere passed to his youngest daughter Julia. She then sold it to her sister’s son, Harold Godwin. Godwin rebuilt the house after a 1902 fire making it look just as it did before only adding a larger living room. A stone bridge, and sunken gardens were added to the landscaping. and added a bridge. Goodwin’s daughter, Elizabeth, was left the house and in 1975, she left it to Nassau County for preservation, education, recreation and a memorial to William Cullen Bryant.
