America’s Oldest Diplomatic Property - Tangier American Legation Museum

Morocco was one of the first countries to recognize the new American republic shortly after the American Revolution. As a result, it is home to America’s oldest diplomatic property overseas and the only U.S. National Landmark abroad. The building—a gift from the Sultan of Morocco in 1821—originally served as both a diplomatic mission and a residence, and it remains owned by the U.S. Department of State. This gift symbolizes the 1786 Moroccan–American Treaty of Friendship, which is still in force today.

Over time, the complex expanded as surrounding houses became available and were purchased. It even served as headquarters for U.S. intelligence agents during World War II. When Morocco’s diplomatic capital shifted to Rabat, the Legation was no longer used for formal diplomatic functions but was repurposed to house a consul office, Peace Corps offices, and other services. Eventually, the building became neglected and was threatened with demolition.

Today, it houses the Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies—a museum and cultural center dedicated to exploring Morocco and Morocco–United States relations. The museum, library, and reception areas display documents and artifacts that illustrate the long-standing relationship between the two countries.

This is what caught my eye; I hope you enjoy!
