Founded As A Tobacco Inspection Station - Scottsville, Va

Originally called Scott’s Landing, Scottsville was founded on approximately 15 acres owned by Dr. John Scott. The town became a major trading hub, featuring a ferry and a tobacco inspection station located on a horseshoe bend of the James River.

The long, flat-bottomed batteaux were invented here to transport tobacco down the river. Both enslaved and free men navigated these vessels, carrying tobacco from Virginia's Piedmont region to markets in Richmond. The Scottsville Museum highlights the town's rich history, including its connection to the river and canal system and its significance during the Civil War.

Scottsville was also the home of the Hatton Ferry, the last hand-poled ferry in America. Unfortunately, as of February, 2025 the ferry is no longer in operation.

This is what caught my eye; I hope you enjoy!
