Dedicated Preservation in Wiscasset, Maine - Castle Tucker

The house was built in 1807 by Judge Silas Lee, when Wiscasset was one of the busiest ports east of Boston. Lee’s death in 1814, and the the financial impact of Jefferson’s Embargo of 1807, forced Lee’s widow to sell. The house passed through several hands until 1858 when Captain Richard H. Tucker, Jr. bought the property. The Tuckers updated the house and added a new entrance and the dramatic two-story porch. The Tucker’s youngest daughter, Jane returned to live full-time with mother as an adult. The mother and daughter team helped to preserve the house and Jane raised money taking in paying guests until the 1930’s, raising pigeons and selling baked goods. Mollie died in 1922 and following Jane’s death in 1964, Captain Tucker’s granddaughter, Jane Standen Tucker moved into the house and made very few changes. Jane turned Castle Tucker over to the organization now known as Historic New England. We can thank these three women for preserving Castle Tucker for future generation to get a look into a lifestyle that no longer exists. Today, the house museum is owned and operated by Historic New England.

Here is what caught my eye, I hope you enjoy it!
