Campobello was the Roosevelt’s 34-room cottage on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada. Since 1964, the International Park has been jointly administered by both the U.S. and Canada.

During the 1880’s, wealthy people had extensive time and the means to enjoy it. Families from New York, Boston and Montreal came to the Island’s fasionable hotels. The Campobello Company, who originally owned the land the park is on, divided the land into smaller lots and sold them off. Several of the guests purchased land, including Franklin Roosevelt’s parents, although their cottage no longer exists today. The summer colony consisted of at least nine cottages constructed in addition to two already existing cottages which were transformed into more elaborate homes.

In addition to FDR and Eleanor’s summer cottage, there are several other historically significant cottages still standing in the historic 2,800-acre Roosevelt Campobello International Park today. The first floor of the Hubbard Cottage is open for self-guided tours, the Prince Cottage welcomes diners as a cafe, and the Wells-Shober hosts “Eleanor’s Teas”.

This is the Wells-Shober Cottage, built for Boston-area lawyer and President of the Campobello Company. In 1912, the cottage was acquired by the Shober Family of Philadelphia.

The Wells-Shober Cottage is the building where “Eleanor’s Tea” takes place. This program is a discussion of Eleanor Roosevelt stories on topics including her personality, accomplishments, relationships, and family life. After attending this program you will have tasted a local tea, as well as hearing stories on Eleanor, a strong First Lady, political figure, activist and diplomat.

This is the area in the Wells-Shober Cottage that hosts the “Eleanor’s Tea” program daily.

The Prince Cottage was built for Lawrence Prince, a cotton broker from St. Louis, and is now the home of the Prince Cafe overlooking Passamaquoddy Bay and Eastport, Maine.

The lighthouse on Campobello Island is on this tiny bit of land that you can walk to when the tide is low. Unfortunately, when we got there the time had already started to come in.

This is a barn, just before the bridge to Campobello in Lubec, Maine.

What you should know:

Open seasonally, check the website for hours and days of operation
You will need a passport and any other credentials needed when crossing into Canada (including Covid-19 vaccine information) from the United States.
Admission to the park is free.
You could spend a couple of hours to en entire day.
Campobello Island is on Atlantic Time, which is one hour ahead of Eastern Time.
Pets on a leash are allowed on the grounds.
There are walking and hiking trails.
There are guided tours of the Roosevelt’s cottage. There is a program called Eleanor’s Tea which takes place in the Wells-Shober Cottage. You can view some of the first floor room in the Hubbard Cottage, and the Prince Cottage is now set up as cafe.
