Hitler’s Mountaintop Headquarters - Eagle’s Nest
This post is intended to bring attention to the feat of engineering, impressive architecture as well as the stunning alpine views associated with Eagle’s Nest.
The Nazi-constructed building was erected atop the summit of the Kehlstein, a rocky outcrop that rises above Obersalberg in southeaster Germany. Eagle’s Nest was completed in 1938 and is considered a historical site. It was not damaged during the war, so it looks just like it did in April of 1945. It was used by members of the Nazi party for government and social meetings.
Over 3,000 men were paid to work day and night, winter and summer, for 13 months to complete the project. The road was blasted out of the mountainside, passing through five tunnels and a hairpin turn to get to the tunnel entrance. Twelve worker died during the construction. It is still considered Germany’s highest altitude road.
Today, Eagle’s Nest is open seasonally as a restaurant, beer garden and tourist site.
Here is what caught my eye, I hope you enjoy!
