Home Of Portugal’s Big Waves - Nazare

Nazare is famed for the giant waves that form in the winter thanks to an underground canyon just north of the town. This attracts extreme surfers from all over the world to this charming and beautiful coastal town.

The old part of Nazare is situated on a hilltop overlooking the beach and you can enjoy panoramic views of the beach and ocean.

This is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazare, an imposing Marian shrine that memorializes an ancient miracle that occurred under the intercession of the Virgin Mary, and was founded in the 14th century.

This is the Memory Hermitage, also known as the Chapel of Our Lady of Nazare, and it is decorated with blue and white tiles.

An interesting piece of culture that has survived here is the wearing of “seven skirts”. It is said that the seven skirts represent seven virtues, the seven days of the week, the seven colors of the rainbow or the layers were was worn to keep them warm waiting for fisherman to arrive back in port.

Whether you’re into water sports or simply want to relax on the beach, Nazare is a great place to visit in Portugal.

What you should know

• Nazare is a year-round destination but the best beach time is June through August, but if you want to see the big waves, they typically occur in November through February.

• Walking is a great way to see the town.

• People are friendly and helpful.

• Many people speak English.

• Public restrooms are available.

• You could spend a couple of hours to an entire day here.

• Parking can be an issue in season.
