Home Of The First American Born Mayor Of New York City - Sagtikos Manor

The colonial revival style Sagtikos Manor was built by Stephanus Van Cortlands, the first American born Mayor of New York City, in 1697. The house, originally on 1,200 acres, was expanded in 1772 and then again in 1902. The grounds included a carriage house, caretaker’s cottage, buttery, potting shed, formal gardens and family cemetery. The house served as British Army headquarters for a brief time during the Revolutionary War, and George Washington slept here during his tour of Long Island in 1790.

Here is what caught my eye; I hope you enjoy!

The house went through several hands before being acquired by Jonathan Thompson in 1758. Many generations of Thompson-Gardiner family owned Sagtikos Manor. David Lion Gardiner, the last owner, allowed the Sagtikos Manor Historical Society to use the manor house on 10 acres since 1964.
