Presidents Trail - Quincy, MA

Quincy has a rich colonial history as the birthplace of founding father John Hancock and presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams. The Quincy Chamber of Commerce created a walking trail called the Presidents Trail that highlights significant landmarks throughout the town.

Founded in 1792, when it split from the town of Braintree, Quincy was named after Col. John Quincy, the grandfather of Abigail Adams and great-grandfather of the former president John Quincy Adams.

The Church of Presidents aka United First Parish Church was constructed in 1828. It is a National Historic Landmark for its association with the Adams family.

The entrance gate to the Hancock Cemetery, which was the first resting place of John Adams, Abigail Adams and John Quincy Adams before being moved to the Church of the Presidents.

The Old House at Peace Field (aka Peacefield) was originally built in 1731 and was purchased by John and Abigail Adams in 1788. The house was later enlarged several times over the years.

Four generations of the Adams family lived in this house from 1788 to 1927.

The family added three additions to the house, as well as updated the garden.

The Stone Library was built in 1870 by John Quincy Adams’ son Charles Francis Adams, to house his father’s more than 12,000 books he collected over the course of his life.

This is the carriage house and stable that now serves as the visitors information center.

The Dorothy Quincy Homestead is a National Historic Landmark for its association with the Adams family and its architecture.

The house was originally built in 1680 by Edmond Quincy II with enlargements and enhancements of the next 200 years.

The house is the childhood home of Dorothy Quincy Hancock, the First Lady of Massachusetts, the wife of John Hancock, the president of the Second Continental Congress, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence and the first governor of the Commonwealth.

This is the birthplace of John Quincy Adams originally built by Samuel Belcher in 1663.

Although not on the Presidents Trail, Pope John Paul II Park is a nice place to visit.

Quincy is also home to the first ever Dunkin’ Donuts in the United States. During WWII, Willam Rosenberg, a shipyard worker here, realized there were not many nearby lunch options. He sold sandwiches, coffee and donuts from a truck and noticed that 50% of his sales were coffee and donuts. He established ‘Open Kettle’, which was renamed Dunkin’ Donuts in 1950.
