The Birthplace Of A Controversial Poet- Walt Whitman’s, Huntington, NY

The Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site includes the restored farmhouse where Whitman was born in 1817, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. There is an interpretive center which includes portraits, letters, manuscripts and other information referring to Whitman, his work and his life. Unfortunately, there is no house interior photography allowed.

Here is what caught my eye, I hope you enjoy!

Leaves of Grass was book of poems referencing secular relationships, including same-sex relationaships and was considered shocking and pornographic at the time.

Whitman in his younger years in this 1854 engraving by Samuel Hollyer. This image was used in the 1855 first edition of Leaves of Grass. Whitman saw himself as a common man and the voice of America.

New York State restored the home in 2001. Unfortunately, no house interior photography is allowed.

‘Whitman with Butterfly’ sculpture is the work of John Gianotti, donated by Daisaku Ikeda, a Buddhist leader, educator and poet.

What you should know:

• Restrooms are available.

• The staff are friendly and informative.

• The self-guided interpretive center has a large amount of information related to Whitman.

• You could spend an hour or two here, depending on your level of interest..

• House tours are guided.

• Check website for the days and hours of operation and any special events.
