The First Lighthouse Built In New York State - Montauk Point Lighthouse
Opened in 1796, this lighthouse was the first built in New York State, and the fourth oldest working lighthouse in the United States. It is built on the site where the Montaukett Tribe built fires to guide their canoes safely home. After the Revolution, to safeguard ships and promote international trade, the building of the lighthouse was authorized in 1792 by the Second Congress under President George Washington. Civilians were the first keepers of the lighthouse until World War II, and then the Coast Guard operated it.
Here is what caught my eye, I hope you enjoy!
