A Collection Of Historic Monumnets in Edinburgh - Calton Hill

This park is right in the middle of the downtown Edinburgh, and easy to get to. Climbing to the top is a great way to orient yourself with Edinburgh. I did upon arriving, because it was close to my hotel. The hill was purchased by the town council in 1724, and was the first public park in Scotland. Calton Hill is part of Edinburgh’s UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The old City Observatory is a historic astronomical observatory that has now been repurposed as a gallery space with a shop and restaurant.

Calton Hill: And the plans for Edinburgh’s Third New Town

This is the National Monument, designed by Cockerell and Playfair and appears to be the most prominent of all the monuments on the Hill. It was modeled after the Parthenon in Athens and was intended to commemorate Scottish soldiers and sailors that died in the Napoleonic Wars. It may look like a ruin, but it is not. While building it, funds ran out and it was never finished.

This is a commemorative tower built between 1807 and 1816, was to honor Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson.

This monument is a memorial to the Scottish philosopher Dugald Stewart (1753-1828) and was designed by William Henry Playfair.

What you should know:

• There is no admission fee for the park.

• It is at the top of a hill, not too challenging, just be prepared.

• There are walking trails.

• Public restrooms are available.

• You could spend an hour or so here.

• There is on the street parking nearby.

• Wear comfortable shoes.

• There are few restaurant options nearby.
