The Birthplace Of The 26th President - Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace

The Roosevelt’s home was typical brownstone located on what was a quiet tree-lined street in the city’s fashionable residential district. Theodore Roosevelt was the second of four children born to socialite Martha Stewart Bulloch and businessman Theodore Roosevelt Sr., who was involved with the plate-glass importing business and the investment firm of Roosevelt & Son. Theodore was born and spent the first 13 years of his life in the house on this this site. The family lived here until 1872, and the house was taken over for business purposes and in 1916, was demolished to make way for a commercial building. After Theodore’s death at Sagamore Hill in 1919, prominent citizens purchased the site, razed the existing building, and paid to have the reconstruction of his boyhood home built as a memorial. The site was opened to the public in 1923 and was donated to the National Park Service in 1963. Rooms have been restored to reflect the way they would have looked between 1865 and 1872.
