A Photo Walk Through Sin City - Las Vegas
Las Vegas was founded in 1905, after the opening of a railroad that linked Salt Lake City with Los Angeles. Urbanization took off with the construction of the Hoover Dam and the influx of young males working on the dam. The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino opened in 1906, and other casinos and theaters were built mostly by the organized crime utilizing the power generated from the dam. The first official casino on the Las Vegas Strip, El Rancho Vegas, opened its doors in 1941 but it was not until 1946, and the construction of the Flamingo hotel that casinos / hotel construction really took off. Eccentric American financier Howard Hughes got involved with Las Vegas real estate in the 1960’s. The Rat Pack and Liberace are also closely associated with the early days of Las Vegas, helping to cement its reputation as the entertainment capital of the world. Casinos have been a part of Las Vegas since the city’s earliest days.
