Bringing Fort Lauderdale History To Life - History Fort Lauderdale
The History Fort Lauderdale museums buildings connect us to the past while also celebrating the present story of the Fort Lauderdale area. This museum neighborhood contains the largest concentration of preserved historic buildings in Broward County. The neighborhood includes the former 1905 New River Inn, the 1907 Pioneer House, a replica of the original 1899 Schoolhouse and an additional building currently used for museum offices. The first school teach in the county was the 18-year-old Ivy Julia Cromartie, who went on to marry and live in nearby Stranahan House.
The former New River Inn houses galleries featuring exhibits and documentation that trace the area's transformation from a military fort to a thriving city along the New River. The museum explores the history of the Tequesta First Nation people, the Seminole and Miccosukee Nations, and Spanish explorer Sebastián Verezaluze, who sailed up the New River on a reconnaissance mission for the Governor of St. Augustine.
The museum also highlights Major William Lauderdale’s arrival in 1838, the construction of forts along the New River, and the impact of Henry Flagler’s railroad expansion in 1896. It continues through Fort Lauderdale’s modern development, showcasing the industries that have shaped the city into what it is today.
This is what caught my eye; I hope you enjoy!
