Historic Gay Beach Town - Cherry Grove, NY
Fire Island is one of the getaway destinations for New Yorkers. Seaside villages and towns where cars are not the usual transportation, all linked together by a sandy beach.
Cherry Grove, Fire Island got its name from the black cherry tree forest that was there in the late 1860’s. Even though Oscar Wilde visited the Island in the late 1800’s, it was not until the 1930’s, 40’s and early 50’s that Cherry Grove started to become more of a refuge for gay men and lesbians, forming one of the country’s first gay beach towns. Actors, writes and other associated with the the theater community would flock to the summer community of Cherry Grove. Truman Capote is said to have finished “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” in Frank Carrington’s house between the Grove and the Fire Island Pines.
Here’s what caught my eye, I hope you enjoy!
