“Place By A Sharp Rock” - Caumsett State Historic Park, Lloyd Neck, NY
Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve is situation on a scenic peninsula extending out into the Long Island Sound and offers miles of nature trails.
Marshall Field III purchased 1,750 acres in Lloyd Neck to create his self-sufficient English-style estate. Field named his estate “Caumsett” meaning “place by the sharp rock” to honor the Matinecock tribe who once lived in this area.
Today, the park occupies approximately 1,500 acres and contains beach, forest, open fields and beautiful gardens. This was one of last grand mansions built on Long Island’s Gold Coast and retains much of its original acreage. The buildings that remain on the property are the main house, polo stables, summer and winter cottages, a farm grouping, greenhouses, and caretakers, walled garden and resident employee housing.
The grounds were designed by the The Olmstead Brothers and Marian Coffin.
