The Largest Stone Fort Built In The United States - Fort Monroe

Construction on Fort Monroe began in 1819 and was completed in 1834, and it was known for its strategic significance during the Civil War. This fort was never captured by the Confederates, and it became a safe haven for escaped slaves seeking refuge which gave the fort its nickname ‘Freedom’s Fortress’. The designated National Historic Landmark, surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay, is situated on 63 acres, with its walls stretching 1.3 miles with a moat.

This is what caught my eye; I hope you enjoy!
